Ski, Freeriding and Alpine Touring

Gaustatoppen is known as one of Norway’s most popular places for freeriding — snow-sure, with spectacular views, easy accessibility, and varied terrain.

Spring skiing on Gaustatoppen

The spring snow on Gaustatoppen is something truly special. While the valley starts to turn green and the sun grows stronger each day, the snow remains thick and firm on the summit – stable, well-settled and perfect for skiing long after conditions have disappeared elsewhere in Norway.

Take Gaustabanen to the top in 15 minutes and you're right in the middle of it. Sun on your face, views over one sixth of Norway and a descent waiting for you. There are few things that beat spring skiing with that view.

May is peak season for spring skiing on Gaustatoppen – and right now the conditions are fantastic. The season is short, so don't wait too long. Check the live pages for updated conditions and buy your tickets while the snow is at its best.

Safe Freeriding — A Magical Experience

Gaustabanen marks a recommended and avalanche-safe route down from the summit. The marked run is a moderately steep, ungroomed slope that goes from Tuddalstippen down to the entrance of Gaustabanen.

The descent is 2.4 kilometres long, with a steepness just under 30 degrees at its steepest point, and it suits intermediate riders — both young and old. Because the route goes from tunnel opening to tunnel opening, it’s just as easy to get up as it is to ski down. This is a fantastic opportunity for a safe summit run.

For Advanced and Expert Rider

On the east side of Gaustatoppen there are seven couloirs that go down from the ridge where it’s possible to ski. These runs are steep — from 40 to 52 degrees at the steepest — and are only suitable for experienced skiers.

If you’re an experienced daredevil, you can have a fantastic experience that in no way falls short of what you’d find in the Alps.

  • Weather and conditions on Gaustatoppen change quickly.

  • The routes are not marked.

  • Regardless of skill level, bring an experienced guide.

  • There is a high avalanche risk — all skiing is done at your own responsibility.

See Varsom for avalanche forecasts.
