Scenic Views & Nature Experiences

Standing 1,883 metres above sea level, Gaustatoppen offers some of Norway’s most breathtaking views and truly majestic natural experiences. From the summit, you can see more than one sixth of Norway and witness spectacular natural phenomena from one of the country’s most iconic peaks.

Norway in 360°

Gaustatoppen, rising 1,883 metres above sea level, is one of Norway’s most iconic mountain peaks. It offers one of the finest panoramic views in the country – on a clear day, you can see more than 60 peaks in every direction.

From the summit on a clear day, you can admire the views towards Jotunheimen to the north, Nordmarka in Oslo to the east, Hardangervidda to the west, and, if you are lucky, even the light from Færder fyr at the outer edge of the Oslofjord.

Spectacular Natural Phenomena

Gaustatoppen is one of the most weather-exposed places in Norway, where wind and storms meet the mountain with full force. Steep mountainsides rise dramatically from the surrounding landscape, and the raw nature creates a powerful sense of height, exposure, and grandeur.

Wind, heavy weather, and rapidly changing conditions shape the mountain throughout the year. One particularly distinctive phenomenon is atmospheric icing, also known as cloud icing, which occurs when supercooled water droplets in clouds freeze upon contact with masts, antennas, and the summit cairn. Over time, this can build up large formations of ice, giving the mountain a striking, almost sculptural appearance.

Being on Gaustatoppen is a truly unique experience — with steep mountainsides, powerful natural phenomena, and views that stretch far beyond the horizon.

As Close to the Stars as You Can Get

On Gaustatoppen, you are closer to the stars than anywhere else in Telemark. At this altitude, light pollution is minimal, and when the sun sets, an impressive canopy of stars spreads across the inky black night sky.

On the right evenings, you may also witness the magical Northern Lights dancing above the mountain, adding vivid colours to the darkness.

Whether you already know the names of the constellations or are just beginning to explore them, Gaustatoppen is the perfect place to become better acquainted with the Milky Way. Simply bring a pair of binoculars and a star chart — and let yourself be captivated.
