Hiking and walks at Gaustatoppen

Gaustatoppen is one of Norway's most iconic and popular mountain peaks. For over 200 years the mountain has drawn hikers from across the country, with routes for all levels from easy family walks to demanding summit hikes. And whichever way you choose to go up, the reward is the same: a view over one sixth of Norway.

From Tuddalstippen to the DNT cabin and the viewing platform

This is the most popular walk at the top of Gaustatoppen. The route starts by taking Gaustabanen up and walking out to Tuddalstippen, where you are met with the iconic views from Gaustatoppen. From Tuddalstippen, wide and sturdy stone steps lead up to the DNT cabin. There is plenty of space to sit both inside and outside the cabin and enjoy a waffle. Just past the cabin it is a short walk up to the well-known viewing platform by the tower, where the views open up in every direction. The walk is suitable for almost everyone and requires no previous mountain experience.

From Tuddalstippen to the summit

From the exit of Gaustabanen, one of the finest walks on Gaustatoppen awaits. The route follows the ridge northward, past the DNT cabin and all the way to the summit at 1,883 metres. It is an open and airy walk with views in every direction the whole way. There is nowhere to hide from the landscape here, and that is exactly what makes it so memorable.

Hike to the summit from Stavsro or Svineroi

Gaustatoppen is easily accessible for anyone used to walking in the mountains. The most popular routes start from Stavsro, Svineroi and Selstali, all clearly marked with DNT's red T markers. The most popular combination of all is to hike up from Stavsro and take Gaustabanen back down. That way you get the best of both worlds: the nature trail up and a unique experience inside the mountain on the way down.

If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you can also take the long route all the way from Rjukan, just as people did before Gaustabanen opened.
