Getting Here and Parking
Gaustatoppen is about a two and a half hour drive from Oslo. There is dedicated parking for Gaustabanen guests along County Road 651 between Tuddal and Rjukan. The road from Tuddal to Gaustabanen is not plowed in winter, so access by car is only possible via County Road 37.

Additional Parking in the Area
Parking at Gaustabanen is limited during peak periods. We encourage visitors to park at nearby locations such as Gaustablikk Mountain Resort, Bygget or Stavsro and use the local shuttle bus service - Gaustaekspressen.

Clothing

Choose sturdy footwear and warm clothing for your visit to Gaustatoppen. Even on a summer day, temperatures inside the mountain stay around 5–8 °C, and weather can change rapidly.

In winter, warm and windproof clothing is essential. Layering with wool or other insulating materials helps keep you comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wheelchairs

Everyone is welcome to use Gaustabanen, but the facility was built in an earlier era and has some limitations. Wheelchair users must use a foldable travel chair and may require assistance on stairs.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on Gaustabanen. A separate ticket must be purchased at the Welcome Centre. All dogs must be kept on a leash on site.

Facilities at the Top

At the summit you will find toilets, a café and a kiosk, as well as the Gaustatoppen Turisthytte with simple meals and snacks. It is also possible to pre-book dinner and overnight stays.

Mountain Responsibility

Gaustabanen is responsible only for guests inside the railway facility. All hiking and skiing on Gaustatoppen is at your own risk. Please familiarise yourself with safety guidelines and weather conditions before your visit.

Capacity

Gaustabanen can carry 75 people inside the mountain at any given time. This includes 25 passengers on the tram and 25 passengers in each of the two carriages.

Winter capacity: 200 people per hour. 100 up and 100 down.
Summer capacity: 250 people per hour. 125 up and 125 down.

Each year, Gaustabanen transports nearly 100,000 visitors to and from Gaustatoppen.

Gaustatoppen is clearly marked and prepared with stairs and designated trails to make access easier for visitors.
