From the summit on Gaustatoppen Mountain, you have a view of 1/6 of mainland Norway. If you ride the tramway up, part of the view is revealed as soon as you walk out of the tunnel at Tuddalstippen.
From here, you can walk up the stone stairs to the DNT tourist lodge and then continue up to the lookout point where you will also find detailed information about what you're seeing on the horizon.
Under ideal conditions, you see 60,000 square kilometres of Norway - in comparison, the total area of Denmark is 43,000 square kilometres - and on a clear day, you actually see all the way to Færder Lighthouse.
The huge observation deck you're standing on is the roof of the Norwegian Telecommunications company's facility which was built in the beginning of the 1970s. Nowadays, the roof serves as both a viewpoint for tourists and a helicopter deck. Experiencing a sunrise or sunset up here provides visitors with a memory to cherish for a lifetime.
The 64-metre-high tower is full of antennas for radio, television and telephony, and is also a communication node for the air navigation services and the emergency communication system here in Norway.
If you want to boast of having hiked all the way to the top of Gaustatoppen Mountain, you will need to make your way around the tower. From here, you have a 20-minute walk along the ridge and out to the cairn at the peak, 1,883 metres above sea level. Remember suitable footwear.
Dining and accommodation
Gaustatoppen Tourist Lodge is staffed and offers light refreshments in the winter and summer seasons. The lodge was built using stone materials from the summit and has been welcoming tourists since 1893.
Why not enjoy one of their famous waffles while you're taking in the impressive view? During the high season, almost 100 litres of waffle batter are used every day, which is equivalent to about 800 to 1,000 waffles.
If you would like to spend the night 1,860 metres above sea level, the Tourist Lodge has sleeping for 13 guests. Accommodation must be booked in advance. Dogs are not permitted inside the lodge, but the windbreak can be used as a dog room if necessary.
Fasiliteter
Ved utgangen av tunnelen ved Tuddalstippen finner du toaletter og et varmerom med plass til cirka 30 personer. Det er også toaletter ved Gaustatoppen Turisthytte.
